CONNECT TO GOD – BY RELEASING YOUR DISTRACTIONS FOR HIS ACTIONS
Let’s face it. We all have them. Probably more than we think.
Distraction has a purpose. The purpose of distractions is to get you distracted from your purpose!!!
Let’s name the obvious ones:
- THE NEWS
- THE BEACH OR DISNEY WORLD (if you live in Florida)
- FOOD (coffee, desserts included)
I am not saying we should never partake. We are blessed to live in this timeframe of history with access to all these things. And we can enjoy them if we will keep our lives balanced.
But the question is, what does real balance look like through Jesus’ eyes?
8 Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.
1 Peter 5:8 AMP
I looked up temperate (you knew I would). It means:
marked by moderation, not extreme or excessive, moderate in indulgence of appetite or desire
So we must understand that of the 24 hours we have to work with daily, we need to pay attention to what we are paying attention to.
If you go to any form of diet program, they tell you to keep track of all your food intake. That means you have to track it.
If the above-mentioned items get more of your time, your affection or your attention than your relationship with God, then the devil who is looking for an opportunity to devour you … well, already is winning to a certain extent.
We have to weigh our time and devotion. I believe if you are reading this that means you are fasting. And hopefully fasting to feed your spirit and deny your flesh because that is the reason for a fast.
The Bible says:
“These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. Matthew 15:8 NKJV
This is what distractions will do … subtly take us away until we forget that serving Jesus is a matter of keeping our hearts close to Him.
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:22-25 NKJV
Other distractions that may be less obvious:
I know that there needs to be continual yieldedness for the Holy Spirit to examine our hearts. We must stay connected to those we trust to speak into our lives to keep our hearts and minds clear and pure, in order to receive all God has for us.
If we don’t release these things, we won’t be able to increase in the freedom He has for us, or the fun He has waiting for us in being sold-out lovers.
True fulfillment and happiness is found when we are reaching out to others and seeing the difference our lives can make.
Recently, at a McDonalds drive-thru in Florida, a lady started the ball rolling by “paying it forward” and paying for the person behind her. But she told the person at the window they had to say, “Merry Christmas.” The “pay it forward” increased and for 6 solid hours no one paid for their own meals!
It made the papers. That probably just touched your heart. Do you know why? It was “preferring the other one.” It was a selfless act. It was an opportunity to give some air time to CHRIST. And we are born for this.
Today, let’s be honest before God and ask Him if there are any of these distractions or sinful things that we have allowed to enter our hearts and take part of the room that is to be reserved for Him and Him alone. Let’s repent and let’s be open to the counsel of those who love us enough to watch over our souls enough to tell you the truth.
When the devil starts plotting, you better start planning.
