LIVING EQUIPPED—CONNECT TO PEOPLE – EFFECTIVE PRAYER FOR YOUR LOVED ONES AND THOSE YOU INFLUENCE

There are many kinds of prayer. The Bible reveals many types of prayers and employs a variety of words to describe the practice.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people. - 1 Timothy 2:1 NIV
Here, we recognize many words used for different kinds of prayer mentioned in one verse.

These are the main types of prayers in the Bible:

The prayer of faith
And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. - James 5:15a NKJV
In this context, prayer is offered in faith for someone who is sick, asking God to heal. When we pray, we are to believe in the power and goodness of God to manifest and bring wholeness.

The prayer of agreement (also known as corporate prayer)
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. - Acts 1:14 NKJV
Their example shows us the importance of doctrine, of staying together, of taking communion to remember the sacrifice of Jesus and to PRAY with others. There is increased power in the prayer of agreement!

The prayer of request (also known as supplication)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. - Philippians 4:6 NKJV

Part of winning the spiritual battle is that we do not just pray. We can pray the perfect prayers, with the perfect will of God, if we pray out the Word of God.

… praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit - Ephesians 6:18a NKJV
The Spirit always prays the perfect will of God.

The prayer of thanksgiving
With thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. - Philippians 4:6b NKJV
Many examples of thanksgiving prayers can be found in the Psalms.

The prayer of worship

The prayer of worship is similar to the prayer of thanksgiving. The difference is that worship focuses on who God is; thanksgiving focuses on what God has done. David knew this importance, because God inhabits the praises of His people! Church leaders in Antioch prayed in this manner with fasting:
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ 3 So after they fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. - Acts 13:2-3 NIV
We are fasting to deny our flesh and become more sensitive to the Spirit. Your prayers are Spirit-led and you are empowered to empower others.

The prayer of consecration

Sometimes, prayer is a time of setting ourselves apart to follow God’s will. Jesus made such a prayer the night before His crucifixion:
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” - Matthew 26:39 NKJV
We can’t get rid of “me” until we surrender to “Him”!

The prayer of intercession

Many times, our prayers include requests for others as we intercede for them. We are told to make intercession “for everyone.”
Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men. -
1 Timothy 2:1 NKJV
We have the ability to touch heaven for others. What an amazing privilege.

Praying in the Spirit
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. - Romans 8:26-27 NKJV
(If you have not received the gift of praying in tongues, you can contact us and we have materials for you and we can pray for you).

The prayer of standing in the gap

In this prayer, we can stand in the gap for those who should be praying and asking God for forgiveness or guidance and repent on their behalf.
So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. - Ezekiel 22:30 NKJV
God was often looking for someone who would intercede for the nation, to create a spiritual wall of protection to keep the enemy from coming to kill, steal and destroy.

Here are three powerful examples of standing in the gap:

1) One of my favorite examples is Nehemiah:

2 that Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. 3 And they said to me, "The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire." 4 So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. 5 And I said: "I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments, 6 please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You. Both my father's house and I have sinned. - Nehemiah 1:2-6 NKJV
Here we see Nehemiah repenting on behalf of himself, his fathers and all of Israel. His prayers are making a difference.

2) But, of course, my favorite is Jesus, who stood in the gap for us.

He stood in the gap and prayed for Peter.
31 And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren." - Luke 22:31-32 NKJV

3) John 17 - All of John Chapter 17 – Jesus stands in the gap for His disciples and for us.

Please take the time to read this right now, and get this in your heart. I suggest the Passion Translation if you have it. If not, use your favorite version. I have found this kind of prayer to be quite effective for those who are stuck in a sin, or don’t see their need any more of turning from their wicked ways. It could be an addiction to lying, to adultery, to any form of alcohol or drug addiction, or even to things that satisfy the soul and not the spirit. Let me demonstrate the way this prayer would go.

Lord, I come to You, standing in the gap for (name the person and pray from this point on as though you were actually them). I ask You, Lord, to forgive me for not keeping You in Your proper position in my heart. I ask that You breathe new life upon me and give me strength to return to You as my first love (or to come to Him as Lord and Savior for the first time). I am sorry for my sins, and I thank You for Your unconditional love and forgiveness, in Jesus’ Name.

Now this prayer can go on as long as the Holy Spirit continues to help you see what is needed. Just keep praying it out. I have seen major turn-arounds from this type of prayer. Now you are more equipped in all these types of prayers. Please utilize them all, and let us experience the glory of His presence along with His divine intervention. Later, after Pentecost, the early Church “devoted themselves” to prayer.
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. - Acts 2:42 NKJV

As we grow in our love for Jesus Christ, we will naturally desire to talk to Him, and take the time to listen and OBEY. You are ready … It’s time to EQUIP OTHERS.
